Dry needling is a highly effective treatment technique used by trained physiotherapists and remedial massage therapists to relieve pain and restore muscle function. It involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific points in the muscle, known as trigger points, to release tension, improve mobility, and reduce pain. Unlike acupuncture, which is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, dry needling is rooted in Western medicine, focusing on treating musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction.
Dry needling restores the muscle's ability to contract and relax by releasing muscle tension. When a dry needle is inserted into a tight muscle, it increases blood flow locally, providing the muscle section with fresh oxygen and nutrients while removing toxins. This, in turn, reduces muscle tension and leads to the decompression of the local blood and nerve supply.
