Experiencing dizziness or vertigo can be extremely challenging, impacting so many aspects of your life. Whilst there can be many causes for dizziness and vertigo, many are surprised to know that physiotherapists can indeed play a key role in treating certain types of these conditions.
Important Note: If you are experiencing sudden onset of dizziness with double vision, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing or severe headache please seek urgent medical care or call 000.
Vertigo is a term to describe dizziness that arises from Benign Positional Paroxysmal Vertigo (BPPV). BPPV is a condition in which incorrect messages of inertia, acceleration/decceleration and rotation are being sent to the brain from the inner ear semi-circular canals. These incorrect messages create an error within the brain, leading to a period of dizziness which is when you will have Nystagmus. Physiotherapists are trained to be able to diagnose and treat BPPV with fast results.
One of the hallmark signs of vertigo is dizziness when lying down in bed and turning over. Other times vertigo can occur is when leaning forward in standing or looking up. If you are experiencing any symptoms similar to this, please come in and see our physiotherapists at Hastings Pysio and Health Port Macquarie and Wauchope.
